There are dozens of fad diets today, and it’s difficult to know which one is right for you. Many try these diets without success, whether it be Weight Watchers, The South Beach Diet, Atkins or others.
People have tried going vegan or vegetarian for weight loss, or thought about transitioning to a Paleo diet or perhaps one that is free of high fat food and carbs. Others just steer clear of sugar.
However, when you deprive your body of certain elements, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will get the results you’re looking for. The body needs some form of sugar; it just doesn’t need refined sugars.
Natural sugars, such as those found in berries, bananas, apples, melons and other fresh fruits, are good for the body.
Your body also needs some form of carbohydrates for energy sustainability. Relying solely on vegetables and fruits can make it difficult to feel energized, especially through a workout.
Carbohydrates keep you fuller longer and give you the proper energy you need for a hard workout.
What is the cabbage soup diet?
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a short-term, 7-day weight loss plan designed to help you flush your body of toxins and trim a few pounds. It is not meant to be a long-term thing, but rather a kick start to a healthier lifestyle.
People who have gone through the whole 7-day journey of the Cabbage Soup Diet claim to have lost up to 10 pounds in a week after following the meal plan.
The crash diet can yield incredible results, but it is not for long-term use because it will deprive your body of nutrients you will need after the 7 days. The diet is only okay for a week when used to help you get closer to your goal and fuel your new healthy lifestyle.
Your caloric intake will drop and you will be limiting yourself in regard to the kinds of foods you can eat each day, which makes it unfeasible for the long-term.
What can I eat on the cabbage soup diet?
You’ll be eating cabbage soup! That’s not all you’ll get to eat, but it is a large portion of it. I know it might sound boring, but there are ways to make it taste better, so don’t get discouraged yet! Let me explain.
Each day, you will eat 2-3 servings of the fat-free cabbage soup. However, each day you are allowed to add certain other foods into the diet. For Day 1, you can have cabbage soup and a fruit, except bananas.
Bananas are only allowed on Day 4 because they are a high starch and high carb fruit.
One Day 2, you can add non-starchy vegetables, but no fruit. Non-starchy vegetables include lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, spinach and mushrooms.
Day 3 permits you to have both fruits and vegetables, and on Day 4 you can only eat your servings of cabbage soup, bananas and skim milk.
On Day 5, you can eat 10-20 ounces of beef and a maximum of 6 fresh tomatoes. It is important for you to drink 6-8 glasses of water on this day in order to flush out the uric acid from your stem.
Drinking a healthy amount of water (about 8 glasses) is a great idea anyways since it can help to keep your vital organs working properly, hydrate your skin and help your hair grow.
Day 6 comprises of beef and vegetables, but the good news is that you can swap the beef for broiled fish or baked chicken without the skin for either Day 5 or Day 6.
For someone who generally doesn’t eat much red meat (or none at all), swapping can be nice for at least one of the days.
Eat your soup at least once today (at least once every day, really), and enjoy as much beef and vegetables as you like, except for potatoes!
Finally, on Day 7, you get to enjoy brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables. Eat as much of these things as you like (and make sure to get in at least one serving of soup!).
What are some tips for this diet?
There’s no denying that though the diet has been rumored to have incredibly good success for knocking off pounds quickly, it does get a bit boring and it is very restrictive.
It’s not restrictive in the amount you get to eat, but more so in the kind of foods you get to enjoy, which can be seen in the detailed list of foods for each day as discussed above.
In order to help you stay on track and see the week through (you can do it!), here are a few tips and tricks:
1. Try and find a dieting partner
Perhaps there is a coworker you feel comfortable asking to join you on your week-long Cabbage Soup Diet; having the support of that friend can really make things easier and encourage you to stick to it.
2. Experiment with new flavors in your cabbage soup
Meaning, follow the recipe and make the soup as it is listed here, but if you feel it’s a bit bland, try adding some hot sauce or other condiment you think could make it better.
Fresh or dried herbs are wonderful, as are hot pepper flakes.

3. Keep a journal while you diet
You have to write about how you feel and to record things that make you feel motivated. Maybe someone complimented your slim figure today or mentioned that they could tell you had shed a couple of pounds.
Maybe they congratulate you on your dedication to the diet, and that can really make you feel empowered!
4. Remember to make attainable goals
It would be amazing to drop 10 pounds (as some people have) on the Cabbage Soup Diet, but you may only lose 5-8. That’s okay!
