The Onion Soup Diet- Is French Onion Soup OK?

Have you ever heard of the Onion Soup Diet? Sister diet to the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Onion Soup Diet consists of eating onion soup along with lean meats and other vegetables. But don’t mistake this onion soup for the oh-so-delicious French Onion Soup that is the favorite of many at restaurants worldwide. French onion soup is by no means a diet soup, for it is packed with fat and calories. Many french onion soups can contain 500 calories or more per cup! The onion soup on the onion soup diet is much more simple. The typical french onion soup recipe looks a little something like this:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 onions, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 fresh thyme sprigs
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup red wine, about 1/2 bottle
  • 3 heaping tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 quarts beef broth
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 1/2 pound grated Gruyere

The Soup

The soup on the onion soup diet consists of a chicken soup broth base, onions, bay leaves, and salt. It DOES NOT contain the cheese, bread, butter, and other fattening ingredients that the reciepe above contains.This makes the onion soup on the onion soup diet much lower in calories, fat, and carbohydrates than the tradional french onion soup that you order at restaurants or can make at home.

Does the Onion Soup Diet Work?

The onion soup diet is a low-calorie diet, so it can work for weight loss if used properly. But in general, the onion soup diet, just like the cabbage soup diet, is not the heathiest diet to embark on for weight loss purposes. Consuming fruits, vegetables, and meats on different days along with a low-calorie soup may help you lose weight in the short-term, but will not likely help you keep the weight off in the the long term.

Healthy, Long-Term Weight Loss with a Soup Diet

To acheive healthy weight loss with a soup diet, try replacing a meal or two a day with a well-balance soup. Make sure that the soup has enough calories to hold you over until your next meal. A soup with under 120 calories is not likely to keep you satisfied until you next meal. A well-balanced soup has protein, carbohydrates, and some fat.
